The Salvation Army Community Driver Mentor Programme

 Introduction

In 2020 the programme expanded into six districts, three of those districts are in the West Coast; Buller, Greymouth and Westland. The programme addresses the disadvantages that inexperienced young drivers face in attaining their restricted and full license. The programme helps drivers with learner and restricted licences become better and safer drivers by providing opportunities for supervised experience, with trained volunteer driver mentors, in a range of driving conditions.

The driver programme also helps youth and adults into employment. The programme coordinator pairs learner drivers with trained mentors who take them for drives twice a week for a 12-week period. An automatic car is provided for use during the programme.

Both programmes for learner and restricted are free – you will need to cover the cost of the test. MSD can cover these costs if you are registered with them.

To apply for the programme you will need a current license, learners or restricted, please contact Katie Jarvie on either katie.jarvie@salvationarmy.org.nz or txt 021 924 801, for more information.

For volunteer mentoring please call Katie on 021 924 801.
